PT Bukit Asam Tbk : PTBA Strengthens Its Path Toward Clean Energy Through Wood Pellet Co-Firing Trial at Tanjung Enim Power

About this update from Pt Bukit Asam (persero) Tbk
Tanjung Enim, September 30, 2025 - PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) continues to reaffirm its commitment to supporting national decarbonization efforts and the energy transition. One concrete step was the implementation of a co-firing trial at its own Mine-Mouth Steam Power Plant (PLTU) in Tanjung Enim, with a capacity of 3x10 MW, conducted from September 22 to 25, 2025. Co-firing, which combines coal with biomass, is part of PTBA's strategic move to reduce carbon emissions while expanding the use of renewable energy. In this trial, PTBA utilized wood pellets derived from land clearing of pulai, acacia, and puspa trees, processed into an environmentally friendly alternative fuel. Prior to this, PTBA had built and operated a wood pellet plant designed specifically to support co-firing needs at steam power plants. The establishment of this facility underscores the company's seriousness in expanding into the green business sector. PTBA's Director of Downstream and Product Diversification, Turino Yulianto, emphasized that the use of wood pellets is not merely a technological innovation, but a tangible contribution by the company to the future of clean energy. "This co-firing trial is an important step in ensuring the technical readiness, safety, and operational reliability of using biomass as a mixed fuel at power plants," he stated. According to Turino, this initiative is in line with the government's commitment to reducing carbon emissions while strengthening national energy security. By utilizing biomass, PTBA is not only providing an alternative energy solution but also supporting Indonesia's target of achieving net zero emissions. PTBA is optimistic that the success of this trial will pave the way for the large-scale implementation of wood pellet co-firing in the future. "In this way, a company once synonymous with coal is now steadily solidifying its new identity as a key player in the transition toward clean and sustainable energy," Turino concluded.
