Today, November 10, 2025 - Hidroelectrica has signed the contract for the implementation of the project "Modernization of the high-power pumping stations at Petrimanu, Jidoaia, and Lotru - downstream of the Dorin Pavel Hydropower Plant," following the completion of the tender procedure conducted through competitive negotiation.
The contract, estimated at RON 486,910,316.25 (EUR 97,887,161) excluding VAT, was awarded at a final value of EUR 97,880,000 excluding VAT to ELECTROMONTAJ S.A., with ELIN MOTOREN GmbH, VOITH HYDRO GmbH & Co. KG, and BUTAN GRUP S.R.L. as subcontractors.
The modernization of the three high-power pumping stations-Petrimanu, Jidoaia, and Lotru-located downstream of the Dorin Pavel Hydropower Plant, represents one of the most significant investments in Hidroelectrica's energy infrastructure in recent years, with a direct impact on enhancing energy efficiency, operational flexibility, and the balancing capacity of the National Energy System. The project will extend the operational lifespan of the pumping installations by at least 30 years, enhance the efficiency of the electromechanical equipment and control systems, and integrate modern automation and digital control technologies aligned with the SCADA/EMS standards implemented within the company. At the same time, the modernization works will contribute to increasing the National Energy System's rapid response capacity in situations of energy imbalance and to optimizing the integration of renewable energy sources.
"The completion of the tender process for the modernization of the Lotru high-power pumping stations and the signing of the contract mark an important milestone in our investment strategy. The project carries both technological and strategic importance. From a technical standpoint, the works will upgrade the installations to the highest European standards of performance and safety, using equipment supplied by partners with strong international expertise, such as VOITH and ELIN MOTOREN. From a strategic perspective, the modernization of these stations strengthens Hidroelectrica's role in ensuring the stability and resilience of the National Energy System, at a time when balancing renewable generation is becoming vital for Romania's energy security. "We are pleased to see our investment strategy advancing through concrete projects that combine technological innovation, sustainability, and responsibility toward the national energy infrastructure," said Bogdan Badea, CEO of Hidroelectrica.
Hidroelectrica is the largest producer of electricity from renewable sources in Romania and remains one of the most significant energy sector players in South-East Europe With a portfolio of more than 6.3 GW of installed capacity in hydropower plants, combined with the Crucea wind farm, the company contributes to national energy security and the achievement of European Union decarbonization targets.
