ENGIE Brasil has awarded WEG a contract to supply the two new generating units that will increase the capacity of the Jaguara Hydropower Plant, located on the Rio Grande River, on the border between the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, in the municipality of Rifaina (São Paulo). The project is aligned with the Company's strategy of investing in high-performance assets powered by 100% clean energy and stems from its successful bid in the 2026 Capacity Reserve Auction held in March of this year.
The total planned investment of BRL 1.2 billion will increase the plant's installed capacity by 232 MW through the installation of two new generating units in existing shafts, each with an output of 116 MW. Commercial operation of the new turbines is expected to begin in 2030.
The Jaguara Hydropower Plant became part of ENGIE Brasil's portfolio in 2017. The facility currently has an installed capacity of 424 MW and a firm energy certificate (physical guarantee) of 324 average MW. The concession for the plant is valid through June 2048.
Expansion Reinforces the Strategic Role of Hydropower GenerationThe expansion of the Jaguara Hydropower Plant highlights the strategic importance of hydropower in the energy transition, given its essential contribution to meeting peak electricity demand and ensuring Brazil's energy security.
"Jaguara is already a significant asset in our portfolio, and this expansion reinforces its role in providing flexibility, helping increase the reliability of the national power system while maximizing the use of existing infrastructure and delivering efficiency and sustainability gains," says Rogério Suematsu, Manager of the Jaguara Hydropower Plant.
WEG is a global technology and energy solutions company operating across power generation, transmission, distribution, and energy storage projects. Its portfolio includes hydro and steam turbines, generators, transformers, substations, automation systems, and battery energy storage solutions (BESS).
"WEG's participation in the Jaguara Hydropower Plant expansion demonstrates our ability to develop and deliver complete solutions for strategic projects in the power sector. By combining engineering, technology, manufacturing, and specialized services, we help enhance the efficiency and reliability of generation assets, supporting our customers in building an increasingly robust and sustainable energy matrix," emphasizes Paulo Leonardo da Silva Sinoti, WEG's Director of Energy Solutions and Services.
Modernization WorksIn parallel with the expansion project, the Jaguara Hydropower Plant is undergoing a comprehensive modernization program launched in July 2023. The works involve investments of more than BRL 500 million, of which approximately BRL 150 million has already been invested.
The project aims to extend the useful life of the facility while increasing its reliability and operational efficiency. The modernization includes upgrades to the plant's four existing generating units, while maintaining their total installed capacity of 424 MW. Completion of the modernization works is expected in 2029.
