Today, April 22, 2026, Hidroelectrica signed a grant agreement amounting to RON 43,370,902.87, obtained through the Modernisation Fund under call P1_OS1.5 - Supporting investments in the development of electricity storage capacities, for the implementation of the project "Battery Energy Storage Facility at Porțile de Fier II".
Hidroelectrica's investment project, with a total estimated value of approximately RON 310 million, involves the installation of a capacity of 64 MW and 256 MWh, representing the largest battery storage project developed by the company to date. The investment contributes to increasing the flexibility of the energy system and to the efficient integration of renewable energy sources by providing balancing and ancillary services.
The implementation of the project leverages the existing hydropower infrastructure as well as the available grid connection capacities, enabling cost optimization and accelerated implementation timelines. At the same time, the project strengthens Hidroelectrica's role in developing the flexibility infrastructure of the National Power System.
"The funding for the Porțile de Fier II project allows us to take a natural step toward a more flexible and better-balanced energy system. Energy storage is no longer an option, but a necessity, especially in a context where renewable generation is continuously increasing, along with the need for balancing services. We are focusing on solutions that intelligently use what we already have - hydropower infrastructure - and complement it with modern technologies, so that we can deliver energy exactly when it is needed. At the same time, these investments help us increase efficiency and better capitalize on every MWh produced," said Bogdan Badea, CEO of Hidroelectrica.
Hidroelectrica is advancing the development of hybridization projects for its existing assets by integrating hydropower capacities with complementary renewable generation solutions and storage systems within a unified operational architecture. This approach enhances portfolio flexibility and efficiency, optimizes the use of existing infrastructure, and maximizes the value of the energy produced, while further strengthening the company's role in ensuring the balance and adequacy of the National Power System.
Hidroelectrica is the largest producer of electricity from renewable sources in Romania and remains one of the most significant players in the energy sector in South-East Europe. With a portfolio of more than 6.3 GW of installed capacity in hydropower plants, combined with the Crucea wind farm, the company contributes to national energy security and to the achievement of the European Union's decarbonization targets.
Recently, the company surpassed a market capitalization of RON 70 billion, a record value for the Bucharest Stock Exchange, confirming investors' confidence in the company's development plans.
