WEG has supplied a custom-engineered W50 medium-voltage motor for a carbon capture compressor system at the Port of Rotterdam, Europe's largest port. Developed in partnership with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), the solution was specifically designed to meet demanding space constraints while delivering high efficiency and reliable performance for a pioneering carbon capture application.
The project required a 400 kW, 11 kV motor capable of fitting within an existing compressor package without major modifications. Standard market solutions could not meet the required footprint or terminal box configuration. Leveraging its engineering expertise, WEG developed a custom-engineered W50 motor featuring a compact terminal box arrangement that enabled seamless integration into the compressor skid while maintaining reliability and ease of maintenance.
Designed for high performance and energy efficiency, the motor achieves IE4 efficiency, converting approximately 95% of the supplied electrical energy into useful mechanical output. The 11 kV design also reduces starting current, minimizing stress on the electrical system and helping avoid additional infrastructure investments while supporting the project's sustainability objectives.
Manufactured and fully tested in Brazil, the motor underwent comprehensive factory testing before being shipped to Belgium for integration into the compressor package and final validation prior to installation in Rotterdam. Throughout the project, WEG worked closely with the OEM and the EPC contractor, providing technical support, sharing 3D models and maintaining regular engineering meetings to ensure compliance with all project specifications and deadlines.
Awarded through a competitive tender process, the project reinforces WEG's capability to develop custom-engineered solutions for complex industrial applications. By combining engineering expertise, energy efficiency and close customer collaboration, WEG successfully delivered a solution that supports carbon capture technology while strengthening its position as a trusted partner for sustainable industrial projects worldwide.
