Torrent Group has inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur, developed jointly by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, PTI reported.
The facility will produce 72,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, making it the largest green hydrogen and natural gas blending project in India’s city gas distribution sector. The hydrogen generated at the plant will be blended with natural gas up to 2% concentration and distributed through Torrent Gas’ existing city gas network in Gorakhpur.
This blended fuel will reach households, compressed natural gas (CNG) stations and industrial users via the established pipeline system. Torrent Gas currently holds the licence to distribute piped natural gas (PNG) and CNG across Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar and Kushinagar.
The company has already established 32 CNG stations, supplying more than 12,000 households and 73 industries and commercial facilities in the region, with plans for further expansion of its network. Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, carries no direct carbon emissions, making it a cleaner alternative to fossil fuel-based hydrogen.
Blending it with natural gas reduces emissions, leverages existing infrastructure and stimulates early demand for hydrogen adoption. The Gorakhpur plant is part of Uttar Pradesh’s broader green hydrogen policy, which targets annual production of 1mn tonnes. State authorities believe such initiatives will accelerate the adoption of hydrogen in households, transportation and industries, while contributing to energy transition goals.
The project also supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and the country’s net-zero roadmap by lowering emissions, building a market for hydrogen-based energy and creating opportunities for deeper decarbonisation across sectors.
