Torrent Power has been awarded the rights to develop a major coal-based power station in central India, following an agreement with the Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL).
According to POWERLINE, the scheme, valued at around INR220bn ($2.5bn), will see the creation of a 1,600 megawatt greenfield plant built under an arrangement where Torrent Power will design, finance, construct, own and operate the facility. Two generating units of 800 MW each are planned, using ultra-supercritical technology intended to boost efficiency and reduce emissions compared with conventional coal plants.
India is still heavily dependent upon coal use to generate much of the country’s power but is making moves to limit emission and clean up areas long used in coal mining and power production.
Under the deal, all of the electricity produced will be supplied to MPPMCL for a period of 25 years at a tariff of INR5.82 per unit. The commissioning of the project is scheduled within six years of finalising the contract.
