With its majority stake in Okologische Klarschlammtrocknung Offenhausen GmbH (OKT), STRABAG is strengthening its activities in the field of technical carbon and further expanding its commitment to sustainable building materials. For the past two years, a dedicated unit has been working on the development and scaling of renewable and mineral raw materials, technical carbon, and CO2-reduced concrete. OKT operates an integrated pyrolysis and sewage sludge drying plant in Offenhausen, Bavaria . Biomass and biogenic residues from forestry and agriculture (e.g., wood chips and corncobs) are processed and converted into certified EBC biochar (European Biochar Certificate), i.e., technical carbon, according to the highest quality standards. This innovative technology enables the active net removal of CO2 from the carbon cycle while simultaneously generating energy. The waste heat generated during the pyrolysis process is used to dry the materials used. It also dries sewage sludge, which can then be used as a low-emission fuel. The goal is the long-term binding of CO2 in building materials such as concrete and asphalt. Biochar serves as a permanent CO2 storage medium, as in the...EU Regulation 2026/285 on Carbon Removals and Carbon FarmingBiochar is anchored in the soil and also has the potential to improve the material properties of materials such as concrete. Furthermore, biochar is used in agriculture and in substrates, for example for urban trees in climate-resilient urban greening projects ('sponge city'). Due to its pronounced water and nutrient retention capacity, it contributes to improving plant growth conditions. The use of technical carbon opens up new avenues for the construction industry to reduce emissions.
