TORONTO, April 12 /CNW/ - Gabriel Resources Ltd. ("Gabriel") announces
that the environmental impact assessment ("EIA") for the Rosia Montana project
is currently pending submission to the Romanian Ministry of Environment,
together with all documents requested by the Ministry for a complete
application.
Recent media commentary from a foreign sponsored NGO opposed to the
development of the Rosia Montana project stating that the EIA procedure for
the project has been suspended, is both false and a gross misrepresentation of
what was said in a meeting between Romanian Minister of the Environment,
Sulfina Barbu, and the European Environmental Commissioner, Stavros Dimas. A
press statement released by the Romanian Ministry of Environment confirms the
inaccuracy of this commentary.
"Circulating false and misleading statements regarding Gabriel's plans to
develop the Rosia Montana project has become standard practice for this
desperate NGO" commented Alan R. Hill, President and Chief Executive Officer
of Gabriel, in reference to the continued campaign of misinformation
perpetuated by foreign sponsored NGOs.
Mr. Hill added that "Unfortunately, we can expect an increased level of
misinformation as Gabriel continues the development of the Rosia Montana
project. The Project will create employment, address the existing pollution
and provide for a clean environment in the future as well as improve the
living standards in the Rosia Montana region."
A European Union delegation visiting Romania this week to discuss
environmental matters commented that the permitting of the Rosia Montana
project was a Romanian domestic affair, but that the European Union would
continue to monitor the process. Gabriel welcomes such scrutiny, as the EIA
has been prepared by an independent team of Romanian and European Union
environmental experts and is fully compliant with all Romanian laws and
European Union Directives, including the new European Union Mine Waste
Directive. Gabriel expects the EIA to set new standards for mining projects in
Romania and the European Union.
