NS United Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (Head Office: Tokyo) has completed the installation of five rotor sails (cylindrical wind-assisted propulsion devices, each 35 meters high and 5 meters in diameter) manufactured by Anemoi Marine Technologies Ltd (Head Office: UK), along with a shaft generator, on the 400,000-deadweight ton ore carrier NSU TUBARAO (Built in September 2020, hereinafter "the vessel") on October 29, 2025. The vessel is engaged in a long-term ore transportation contract with Vale International SA* (Head Office: Switzerland).
A rotor sail is a device to obtain propulsion by using the pressure difference created by a rotating cylinder mounted on the deck. It is expected to reduce fuel consumption and GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions from the vessel by approximately 6~12%.
NS United Kaiun Group is actively promoting introduction of energy-saving devices such as rotor sails, as well as transition to next-generation fuels to reduce GHG emissions, in pursuit of carbon neutrality. The group will continue to take proactive measures to further reduce environmental impact and contribute to building a sustainable future.
*Vale is committed to supporting the maritime industry in achieving the International Maritime Organization's (IMO)
decarbonization targets. Aligned with the ambition of the Paris Agreement, Vale also has a target of a 15% reduction in scope 3 emissions by 2035, related to the value chain, of which shipping emissions are part, since the ships are not
