New Hope : Acland Coal – ramping up its support of local schools and community groups

New Acland Coal has a long and proud history of giving back to the community and donated more than $500,000 to 50 different schools, community groups and sporting teams in FY25. The financial support included a $20,000 donation to Quinalow Prep-10 State School, which allowed the school to continue its award-winning Agriculture-Science and Show Team programs. Teacher, Brooke Cuddihy said Quinalow Prep-10 State School is one of a handful of Australian schools to offer agricultural-science as a subject from Prep through to Year 10. "The Agricultural-Science program was launched four years ago following support from the local community and parents, who expressed a strong desire for students to have access to agricultural-science studies. "Despite our rural location, we're not recognised as an agriculture school by the Queensland Department of Education and receive no funding for our Agricultural-Science program. "We're forced to be completely self-funded. This means New Acland Coal's ongoing support is a massive help. "The growth of the Agricultural-Science program coincided with a surge in enrolments at the school, with numbers up 30 per cent compared to last year. "Parents have realised the amazing opportunities and the brilliant education available at Quinalow Prep-10 State School." Year 10 student and Cattle Show Team captain, Josie Lindsay, said the Show Team program is the highlight of school. "It definitely makes you want to go to school," Josie said. "It's very good and so cool. So many kids from this school do it and love it. It's really fun. "We get to compete in a lot of fairs and shows throughout the district, which is really fun. We also get to go to the Ekka, which is very cool." New Acland Coal General Manager, Dave O'Dwyer, said the operation is committed to supporting the local community via a wide range of projects, partnerships and in-kind support. "Sponsoring and supporting local organisations and school initiatives allows us to build stronger and more sustainable communities," Mr O'Dwyer said. "More than 90 per cent of the current workforce live within 50 kilometres of New Acland Mine, including at Quinalow. It's a privilege to support local school students so they can thrive."
