HK Electric Subsidy Shows Early Success in Supporting NGOs' Low-carbon Journey

Launched in 2025, HK Electric's enhanced "Energy-efficient Community Subsidy Programme" under Smart Power Services provides up to $3 million in full subsidies for non-residential customers, non-profit organisations and schools to adopt energy-efficient electrical equipment - including electric kitchen appliances, air-conditioning systems, energy-saving rooftop coatings, and solar photovoltaic systems.

During a visit today (11 February) to the scheme's first beneficiary, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) Fong Shu Chuen Social Service Building (FSCSSB) in Shau Kei Wan, HK Electric Managing Director Mr. Francis C.Y. Cheng was pleased to learn that the building is expected to achieve a 15-20% reduction in overall carbon emissions within a year.

Guided by the building's management team, Mr. Cheng was briefed on the progress of various energy-efficiency enhancements. These include replacing air-conditioning systems with Grade 1 energy-label models, installing LED lighting systems, adding sensor-controlled devices in designated passages, introducing electric-powered kitchen equipment, electric dryers and applying passive cooling paint on the rooftop to help reduce indoor temperatures.

These energy-saving measures have enhanced the building's lighting and air-conditioning efficiency, while creating a safer and more comfortable cooking environment for preparing meals. In addition, the building is expected to cut carbon emissions by about 180 tonnes annually, equivalent to planting 5,200 trees.

Mr. Cheng said, "HK Electric has long been committed to promoting energy efficiency and decarbonisation. Through our Energy-efficient Community Subsidy Programme under Smart Power Services, we support different sectors in enhancing efficiency with innovative solutions. The achievements at FSCSSB demonstrate that energy-saving measures can deliver both environmental benefits and operational improvements. We look forward to supporting more

eligible applicants as we work together towards Hong Kong's carbon-neutrality vision."

Mr. Cheng added that HK Electric will continue to work closely with community partners to enhance energy efficiency, introduce smart management technologies, and promote renewable energy. Together, these efforts will drive decarbonisation on multiple fronts and foster a greener and more sustainable living environment for Hong Kong.

With the Lunar New Year approaching, Mr. Cheng and members of the HK Electric Service Team distributed gift bags to nearly 200 elders in the building's care home. They also served the elderly a local Shau Kei Wan specialty - fish balls and fish - cake slices, as an extra dish for dinner, contributing in a small way to supporting the local economy. Mr. Cheng also visited seniors with limited mobility or who are bedridden, offering festive greetings in person.
