Ecopack to install 2.03-MW solar plant amid Pakistan’s accelerating solar shift

· Issued by Ecopack Limited

Ecopack Limited, a company in Pakistan’s plastic packaging industry, has unveiled plans to install a 2.03-MW solar power generation facility, in a move aligned with the country’s fast-growing shift to renewable energy, Business Recorder reported.

In a stock exchange filing, the company said its board had approved capital expenditure to acquire 3.63 acres of land and commission the solar plant. The initiative reflects a growing trend among Pakistani corporates to adopt sustainable energy sources, as rising electricity costs and environmental pressures drive a broader push toward decarbonisation.

Ecopack, which produces PET bottles and preforms for the beverage and liquid packaging industries, joins a growing list of listed companies investing in solar power to cut operational costs and lower emissions. Business Recorder noted that just days earlier, Gharibwal Cement Limited commissioned an additional 12.5-MW solar installation at its facility—further evidence of an accelerating renewable energy shift in Pakistan’s industrial sector.

Despite persistent macroeconomic challenges, Pakistan has emerged as one of the world’s leading solar markets. According to the Global Electricity Review 2025 by UK-based think tank Ember, the country imported 17 GW worth of solar panels last year, placing it among the top global buyers of photovoltaic (PV) systems.

As reported by Business Recorder, this surge in solar adoption has driven up net-metering capacity to 2,813 MW as of March 31, 2025, with residential, commercial, and industrial users contributing to the rise in decentralised energy generation.

However, this rapid growth has also brought new complications. Energy policymakers are now grappling with grid management concerns and financial pressures linked to capacity payments for idle thermal power plants, as overall electricity demand remains relatively flat despite increased generation capacity.
