Adani Power signs 25-year deal to supply 2,400 MW of power to India’s Bihar

Adani Power Ltd (APL), a unit of the Adani Group , has signed a 25-year power supply agreement with Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd (BSPGCL) to deliver 2,400 megawatt (MW) of electricity to the state,  IANS  reported. The electricity will come from a greenfield ultra-supercritical thermal power plant planned at Pirpainti in Bhagalpur district. The deal follows a Letter of Award issued in August by BSPGCL on behalf of North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (NBPDCL) and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (SBPDCL). APL will invest about $3bn to develop the 2,400-MW facility, comprising three 800-MW units, under the Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate (DBFOO) model. The coal linkage has been allocated under the Government of India’s SHAKTI policy. The project is expected to create 10,000–12,000 jobs during construction and about 3,000 roles once operational, with commissioning scheduled within 60 months. The agreement builds on APL’s earlier success with Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Ltd (MPPMCL), where it secured 1,600-MW capacity under India’s first thermal power tender to adopt the greenshoe option. This included an additional 800 MW alongside the initial award. The two 800-MW units will be developed in Anuppur district, Madhya Pradesh , and are also targeted for commissioning within 60 months. Recently, Adani Group announced plans to invest about $60bn in India’s power sector by FY32, with a focus on renewable energy, generation, and transmission and distribution,  PTI  reported. Out of this, Adani Power is expected to receive about $22bn to expand capacity to 41.9 GW from 17.6 GW at present.
