West Wits Mining Ltd (ASX:WWI, OTCQB:WMWWF) has announced that it has produced and stockpiled its first underground ore at the Qala Shallows Gold Project in South Africa’s Witwatersrand Basin , marking what it described as a “major operational milestone” in the company’s transition from development to production. The first ore tonnes were hauled to surface and stockpiled during October, validating the mine design and marking the start of ramp-up activities, the company said in an ASX filing on October 14 . Located near Johannesburg , the Qala Shallows project forms part of West Wits’ broader Witwatersrand Basin Project , which hosts a JORC-compliant resource of about 4.3mn oz of gold. The company expects initial production to average around 60,000 oz per year, according to feasibility estimates. Managing Director Jac van Heerden said the milestone represented a “transformational moment” for the company, adding that the team had worked through logistical and regulatory challenges to reach operational readiness. Qala Shallows lies near DRDGOLD’s surface retreatment operations and Pan African Resources’ Evander complex, both of which draw from historic Witwatersrand reefs. The project comes as South Africa’s gold sector faces headwinds from power shortages, rising costs, and declining grades at mature mines, though renewed investment is targeting selective high-margin deposits. West Wits said development work will continue through the December quarter, focusing on ore drives and stopes as it prepares for planned steady-state operations.
