TNB commissions Malaysia’s first grid-integrated utility-scale BESS

Malaysia’s state-owned utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has commissioned the 100 MW/400 MWh Santong battery energy storage system (BESS), marking the country’s first utility-scale BESS directly integrated into the national grid, POWERLINE reports.

The facility is located at the 132/33 kV Santong main intake substation in Paka, Dungun district, Terengganu.

The project was officially inaugurated on May 18, 2026 by Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA).

It has a project cost of MYR380mn ($95.6mn).

The system is equipped with grid-forming inverters and liquid-cooled battery technology.
