[Photo/WeChat account of AVINEX] Construction has begun on the baggage handling system for Terminal 3 of Shanghai Pudong International Airport's fourth-phase expansion project. The system, a key part of the future terminal, will significantly improve baggage sorting and transfer capacity. The system, which will be the largest baggage handling system within a single terminal building in China, features 52 kilometers of conveyor lines. It will support check-in, arrival, transfer, and oversized baggage handling. ICS Independent Carrier System tracks every bag in real time throughout the process. [Photo/WeChat account of AVINEX] Equipped with the Independent Carrier System featuring high-speed tracks and smart trays, the system uses RFID tags to enable real-time tracking of each bag throughout its journey. Automated storage facilities and self-service baggage drop channels will also be installed. Integrated with a digital twin management platform, the system will provide end-to-end visibility into baggage movements and equipment operations, improving efficiency and reliability while enhancing the passenger experience. Construction work spans multiple floors of the future Terminal 3 building, posing significant coordination and logistics challenges. The project team has divided the work into 14 zones and is using Building Information Modeling technology to optimize the design and avoid potential conflicts.
