New Biomass Silos at Fortum’s CHP Plant in Częstochowa: Another Stage of Mostostal Warszawa’s Works

Work is underway at Fortum's combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Częstochowa to modernize the fuel transportation and feeding system. One of the latest completed stages of the investment was the installation of roofs on two new silos designed for biomass storage. The operation required specialized equipment, including a 500-tonne crane. The new silos were built on the site of the former coal storage yard. Each has a capacity of approximately 8,000 m³ and will be used for enclosed storage of dry biomass, primarily wood chips. The roof structures were installed by teams from Mostostal Warszawa and BMH Technology. Infrastructure for Biomass Deliveries The installation of the silo roofs is part of the broader scope of work being carried out by Mostostal Warszawa as part of the modernization of the fuel transportation system at Fortum's Częstochowa CHP plant. The project includes the construction of an external biomass feeding system, a new inclined conveyor gallery, infrastructure for unloading biomass from railway wagons, and the expansion of the existing fuel transportation system. A service platform is also being constructed along the railway tracks. It will be used during biomass deliveries by rail. The new infrastructure will enable fuel to be delivered by rail in addition to the road transport currently used. An Element of Fortum's Decarbonization Programme in Częstochowa The works carried out by Mostostal Warszawa form part of Fortum's decarbonization programme for its Częstochowa CHP plant. From the 2026/27 heating season, the plant's main generating unit is planned to operate exclusively on biomass. The CHP plant will use biomass that meets sustainability criteria verified under the relevant KZR certification system. Mostostal Warszawa is carrying out this scope of work under an agreement signed with Fortum Power and Heat Polska on 20 December 2024. The completion of the works covered by the contract is scheduled for 2027. The biomass transportation, unloading and storage infrastructure being developed will provide the fuel-handling facilities needed to change the way the CHP plant operates and reduce the use of fossil fuels in Częstochowa. photo.
