Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) plans to carry out an extensive upgrade of the environmental equipment serving blast furnace No. 6 as part of an environmental improvement project for its blast furnace operations. The project includes the installation of an aspiration system for the blast furnace's cast house and stock house.
The project is designed to minimise environmental impact, extend equipment service life and improve working conditions. The new equipment is scheduled to be put into operation in 2027.
The upgrade includes the installation of two electrostatic precipitators, each capable of treating up to 1 million cubic metres of air per hour. Following treatment, particulate matter concentrations will not exceed 20 milligrams per cubic metre, in line with current environmental standards. The precipitators will ensure the efficient removal of dust from working areas and from equipment within the stock house and cast house systems of blast furnace No. 6. Dust-laden extraction air will be conveyed to the electrostatic precipitators for treatment. All dust emission points will be enclosed to maintain minimal dust levels in the working environment.
The automated system will provide for the separate collection of dust from the stock house and cast house. The recovered dust will then be fully recycled into the sinter production process, creating a closed-loop raw material cycle.
