Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) continued to improve its energy management system (EMS) and enhance the energy efficiency of its production processes in the first half of 2026, generating an economic benefit of approximately RUB 387 million.
One of MMK's main energy-saving measures is the optimisation of its consumption of purchased electricity, which delivered savings of RUB 207.3 million in the first six months of 2026. The fulfilment of obligations under energy service agreements generated savings of RUB 129.9 million, while reducing energy consumption across MMK Group's business units and production sites resulted in savings of RUB 100.4 million.
Digitalisation and the implementation of energy-efficiency initiatives generated an economic benefit of RUB 19.3 million. Eighty-eight of the 464 initiatives submitted across MMK Group in the first six months of 2026 have already been implemented.
"Ensuring the efficient use of energy resources and reducing their contribution to production costs are MMK's key objectives when it comes to managing energy efficiency. We take a comprehensive approach to managing energy consumption and energy efficiency, implementing a range of initiatives in several areas, which has enabled us to deliver sustainable results while keeping energy costs under control," said Viktor Rashnikov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of PJSC MMK.
In the first half of 2026, the specific energy intensity of steel production decreased by 5%, natural gas consumption fell by 4%, and the volume of coke oven gas recovered increased by 11%.
To identify instances where fuel and energy resources were being used inefficiently, MMK developed and rolled out a Fuel and Energy Resource Loss Reporting chatbot. As part of the chatbot's migration, its functionality was transferred to the MMK Online corporate platform. In the first half of 2026, the chatbot generated savings of RUB 18 million, equal to the amount generated throughout all of 2025.
An analysis of MMK's EMS showed that the Company's production activities comply with the requirements of Russian legislation on energy conservation and energy efficiency, as well as with the Russian state standard on energy management systems (GOST R ISO 50001-2023).
