MMK Cement Plant upgrades equipment, boosting environmental performance

· Issued by Mmk

The Magnitogorsk Cement and Refractories Plant (part of MMK Group) has completed an extensive reconstruction of its slag-dryer drum furnaces. The installation of mixing-type air heaters will reduce energy consumption in the slag-drying section of the production shop by 10% and decrease the plant's environmental footprint.

As part of the upgrade, the plant replaced outdated, brick-lined furnaces with modern heat generators. The new equipment operates on a clean-combustion principle: recirculation burners reduce the flame temperature, preventing the formation of nitrogen oxides. The improved mixing of gas and air minimises carbon monoxide emissions by ensuring the complete combustion of the fuel.

A key advantage of the modern units is their modulating output control system, which makes it possible to adjust the operating parameters in line with process requirements. The installation's high thermal efficiency will also reduce fuel consumption and lower carbon dioxide emissions.

"We are not only modernising our production facilities but are purposefully implementing solutions that minimise our atmospheric impact. It is of fundamental importance for us to continue to improve the plant's efficiency while strictly complying with leading environmental standards and protecting the quality of life in Magnitogorsk," said Director of MMK's Cement and Refractories Plant Yuri Kochubeev.

In addition to upgrading equipment in the production shop, the plant is also carrying out the large-scale installation of an automated industrial emissions monitoring system that will enable real-time air monitoring. The design documentation is currently being developed, and procurement of the main process equipment is underway.
