Indian state-run Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (NSE: MAZDOCK) has acquired a controlling 51% stake in Colombo Dockyard PLC for INR2.5bn ($27mn), marking its first international acquisition and a strategic expansion into the regional maritime sector, BW Online reported.
The Mumbai-based shipbuilder gains operational control of the Sri Lankan facility, a key shipbuilding and repair hub in South Asia. The acquisition is expected to strengthen Mazagon Dock’s capabilities across ship construction, maintenance, and engineering services, while expanding its presence beyond India.
The stake acquisition was completed through a phased process, beginning with participation in a rights issue followed by a mandatory offer to existing shareholders, ultimately raising Mazagon Dock’s holding to a majority 51%.
Located within the Port of Colombo, the dockyard offers strategic access to the Indian Ocean Region, one of the world’s busiest shipping routes. Analysts say the deal could enhance India’s maritime footprint and support greater regional collaboration in shipbuilding and defence manufacturing.
The transaction comes at a time when Colombo Dockyard had been seeking a strategic investor to address financial challenges and stabilise operations. Mazagon Dock’s entry is expected to bring capital support, improved operational efficiencies, and a clearer long-term growth trajectory for the Sri Lankan company.
For Mazagon Dock, a Navratna public sector enterprise under India’s defence ministry, the move signals a shift towards becoming a regional maritime player with global ambitions, in line with India’s broader efforts to strengthen its presence across the Indo-Pacific and expand its shipbuilding ecosystem.
