HK Electric Lamma Power Station
Boosts Natural Carbon Sink to Promote Decarbonisation
Reducing carbon emissions and expanding carbon sinks are both vital in tackling climate change. Under-Secretary for Environment and Ecology Diane Wong and HK Electric Managing Director Francis C.Y. Cheng joined about 100 stakeholders and green supporters in planting 135 trees and shrubs at Lamma Power Station (LPS) yesterday (10 April). Marking HK Electric's 135th anniversary, the event promoted carbon sink initiatives, carbon neutrality and biodiversity.
The event took place on the main bridge leading to the gas-fired generation units at LPS. A total of 135 seedlings were planted, including four native tree species
- Hong Kong Gordonia, Ivy Tree, Chinese Holly, and Wild Bean - along with four native shrubs - Rose Myrtle, Common Melastoma, Chinese Ixora, and Red Azalea, all thoughtfully chosen to enhance ecological benefits.
Mr. Cheng emphasised the significance of the initiative. "Planned landscaping has been integral to LPS's sustainability efforts since its inception. The selected species not only enhance greenery but also provide habitats and food sources for wildlife. Our bird surveys conducted inside the station in recent years have recorded up to 51 species, demonstrating that LPS is a bird haven rich in biodiversity," he said.
"These 135 seedlings will continue to enhance biodiversity while acting as a natural carbon sink to offset emissions. The planting site, situated on the main bridge to our gas-fired units at LPS, will be named the 'Eco-Carbon Bridge', symbolising HK Electric's commitment to carbon neutrality," he added.
Mr. Cheng pointed out that the Company had raised gas-fired power generation to about 70% while working with the Government to explore the use of green hydrogen and other zero-carbon energy sources for electricity generation. The 'Smart Power Services' of the Company facilitate carbon reduction among customers and communities and the "Happy Green Campaign" has promoted renewable energy, energy efficiency and low-carbon living among the public and young people for over 20 years.

Under-Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Diane Wong, commended HK Electric's dedication to carbon reduction. "For over 20 years, the 'Happy Green Campaign' has actively encouraged the community to save energy and cut carbon emissions. I sincerely thank HK Electric and everyone involved for their continued efforts and contributions."
She further highlighted past initiatives under the Campaign, such as the Happy Green Fair and the 'Back in Fashion' design competition, which have provided valuable opportunities for the public and young people to deepen their understanding of low-carbon living and carbon neutrality. "We look forward to seeing HK Electric roll out more activities this year, fostering green education and benefiting future generations," she remarked.
The event also brought together key environmental leaders, including Ken So, Director of The Conservancy Association and tree-planting advisor for the event; Cheng Luk Ki, Director of Green Power; Jeffrey Hung, CEO of Friends of the Earth (HK); and Joe Chow, Head of Corporate and Community Partnerships of WWF- Hong Kong.
Representatives from the Energy Advisory Committee, the Council for Carbon Neutrality and Sustainable Development, the Lamma Island Rural Committees, the Islands District Council, HK Electric's Education Fund Advisory Committee, and the Customer Liaison Group also took part, alongside HK Electric's young and elderly ambassadors, as well as eco-leaders under "Green Hong Kong Green", all joining forces to plant trees and inspire greater public engagement in carbon reduction.
The event also kicked off this year's "Happy Green Campaign", with a surplus food cooking competition as one of its highlights. The 2024/25 'Happy Green Ambassadors' are undergoing training, with top performers set for an exchange tour on energy innovations in Mainland China. HK Electric will further promote sustainability through school talks and UNSDG workshops.
The Happy Green Campaign is a flagship project under HK Electric's Smart Power Education Fund. Through a network of more than 720 schools, social media and online platforms, it promotes energy efficiency, renewable energy and low-carbon living to the public and the younger generation. Applications for activities in the upcoming 2025/26 academic year will open in mid-July and member schools are encouraged to participate.
