FREQUENTIS strengthens Norway's maritime safety as Kystverket takes control of coastal radio
  • Frequentis supports Kystverket's takeover of national coastal radio infrastructure from Telenor
  • The transition gives Norway full sovereign control over critical maritime communications supporting emergency response and national preparedness
  • The system covers 150 sites and nearly 500 radio units, safeguarding communications for 42,000 Norwegian-licensed vessels plus additional foreign vessels in Norwegian waters
  • Direct collaboration between Kystverket and Frequentis enables operational alignment and future system development

Frequentis has supported the successful transition of Norway's national coastal radio service to Kystverket, a Norwegian government agency responsible for the water transport infrastructure along the 9,200-kilometre coast of Norway. This transition represents a significant step toward bringing critical maritime communication infrastructure fully under state ownership.

Effective 1 January 2026, Kystverket assumed full technical and operational responsibility for the coastal radio network, previously operated by Telenor. This transition strengthens Norway's ability to manage, prioritise and further develop essential maritime communications in line with national safety and preparedness objectives.

The coastal radio system forms the shore-based component of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and spans approximately 150 locations with nearly 500 radio units. It supports all maritime communication categories; Distress, Urgency, Safety, and Routine, along Norway's extensive and complex coastline.

Operational coordination is provided by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), which monitors distress channels around the clock and coordinates emergency response across Norwegian waters.

The system serves approximately 42,000 licensed vessels, including both commercial and recreational traffic.

Norway's long coastline and vast sea areas make reliable maritime communications essential. The infrastructure supports navigational and weather warnings, routine communications and emergency coordination, with thousands of safety messages broadcast each year and regular radio checks between vessels and shore stations.

The Frequentis solution ensures high availability, redundancy and resilience across distributed infrastructure, supporting uninterrupted maritime operations in demanding conditions. "This transition represents a decisive step in strengthening Norway's control over critical maritime infrastructure and long-term resilience in national safety systems," a draft customer statement reads.

Following the handover, Frequentis will work directly with Kystverket's leadership and technical teams, enabling closer collaboration, faster alignment on operational needs, and continued evolution of the system.

"This milestone reflects the strength of our long-standing partnership with Kystverket and our shared commitment to secure, future-ready maritime communications," said Khashayar Saravandi-Rad, Vice President Maritime at Frequentis.

Frequentis has supported Telenor Kystradio since 1998, with Kystverket now representing its second-largest maritime customer. The transition reinforces the company's role as a trusted provider of mission-critical communication systems for national infrastructure worldwide.
