Summary by 6ix

Lleida.net, a listed provider of certified notification, electronic contracting and digital signature services, said on October 6 that the SMS traffic it delivers to Spanish operators has risen 40% since January, driven by Spain's mandatory registration of message senders.

Key details

  • Lleida.net says the growth sped up with the regulation's first steps and has surged since the rules fully applied on September 15. Spain is the main destination of the company's SMS traffic.
  • Lleida.net estimates its market share at between 20% and 25% of quality SMS traffic in Spain, meaning transactional, non-advertising messages such as two-step verification codes and notifications. It says the sender registry made it possible to calculate that share.
  • Since September 15, telecom operators must block text and multimedia messages (SMS, MMS and RCS) that use a sender name or alias not entered in the alias register of Spain's telecoms regulator, the CNMC, or that arrive through a provider not authorised in that register. The rule aims to curb smishing, SMS fraud that impersonates banks, companies and public bodies.
  • Lleida.net is a telecom operator with its own numbering assigned by the CNMC and can assign numbers to its clients. Lleida.net says that with the registry, traffic from large messaging platforms is being directed to authorised providers, and that its clients have increased their traffic with it after registering their senders.
