Egyptian industrial group Elsewedy Electric (EGX:SWDY) is currently planning to inject up to $1.3bn in new investments into Algeria as part of efforts to diversify its activities in the country into industrial, housing, tourism and agricultural sectors, Asharq Business reported on May 19.
Elsewedy Electric is an Egyptian group that manufactures integrated energy products and provides large-scale infrastructure, engineering, and digital grid solutions across more than 100 countries.
Mustafa Awad El Helwany, Elsewedy Algeria General Manager, said the proposed investments have already been presented to the Algerian government for feasibility assessment. The planned spending would add to $3bn in investment agreements signed during the African Intra-Trade Fair in September 2025, bringing the company’s total investment commitments in Algeria to $4.3bn. The commitments are in addition to existing investments valued at around $500mn.
El Helwany said Elsewedy Electric Algeria is preparing to receive land and properties from Algerian authorities to launch projects agreed during the trade fair. The projects cover seawater treatment, wastewater systems, agricultural irrigation, aluminium production and electrical materials.
CEO Ahmed Elsewedy said the company and Algerian state-owned Société Nationale de l'Électricité et du Gaz (Sonelgaz) are studying the creation of a joint venture to develop solar and wind energy projects across African markets, including Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon. He added that seven projects are currently under study with Algerian authorities, while the company is also exploring investments in fibre-optic cable manufacturing to meet demand in both Algerian and wider African markets.
