Canada's Crown Point Energy acquires Argentine hydrocarbon concessions

· Issued by Crown Point Energy, Inc.

Canadian energy company Crown Point Energy has announced a significant expansion into Argentina's oil sector, with its subsidiary Crown Point Energia S.A. entering agreements to acquire hydrocarbon concessions from TecPetrol, Pampa Energía, and Argentine national oil company YPF.

The transaction involves acquiring the interests of TecPetrol, Pampa, and YPF in the El Tordillo, La Tapera, and Puesto Quiroga hydrocarbon exploitation concessions (Chubut concessions) in Chubut province.

'This acquisition represents an excellent opportunity for the company to acquire a 95% operated interest in producing crude oil assets in Argentina with an average daily production level of approximately 5,449 boepd during the four-month period ended April 30, 2025, comprised of 4,252 bpd of light and medium crude oil and 7,179 mcf/d (0.20mn cubic metres per day) of natural gas,' Crown Point Energy said in a press release.

The strategic value of these assets extends beyond immediate production capabilities. The deal also includes a 4.2% stake in Terminales Marítimas Patagónicas, which operates a crucial offshore loading facility for transporting crude oil from the Chubut concessions to both domestic and export markets, which Crown Point said would provide it with essential infrastructure access.

Crown Point has structured the acquisition with a base purchase price of approximately $57.9mn (CAD 79.27mn) in cash, with additional contingent consideration of up to $3.5mn (CAD 4.79mn), subject to standard closing adjustments. The phased completion timeline sees transactions with TecPetrol and YPF expected to close in Q3 2025, while the Pampa acquisition should conclude in June 2025.

This acquisition reflects the broader surge of international interest in Argentina's energy sector under President Javier Milei's administration. The momentum was further demonstrated this week when Milei travelled to Italy to meet with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, overseeing a strategic agreement between YPF and Italian energy giant Eni for the Argentina LNG project.

Meanwhile, China's PetroChina is preparing to establish operations targeting the prolific Vaca Muerta formation by late 2025.

Crown Point's entry into Argentina's energy landscape signals growing confidence among international investors in the country's hydrocarbon potential. However, the success of these investments will depend on Argentina's ability to maintain stable regulatory frameworks and economic policies that support long-term energy development, particularly as the Milei administration continues implementing significant economic reforms.
