BMW announces expansion of its San Luis Potosí EV plant

German automaker BMW said it will invest €800mn to expand its San Luis Potosí plant, making it the first facility able to produce fully electric vehicles and vehicle batteries in Mexico , El Economista reported.  The expansion, due to begin production in 2027, will see the Mexican plant manufacture two models on BMW 's Neue Klasse platform — the iX3 SUV and the i3 sports sedan — reinforcing Mexico's position in global electric vehicle supply chains. 'The next stage for BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí will be marked by the expansion of its capabilities for integrating electric vehicles into our production line. This technological and organisational adaptation will allow us to further strengthen our team and optimise our processes in the face of an increasingly volatile environment,' said Klaus von Moltke , President and CEO of BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí. BMW began operations at the San Luis Potosí facility in 2019, and the plant currently employs nearly 3,700 workers who assemble the 3 Series Sedan, the M2 and the 2 Series Coupé for global export. The latter two models are produced exclusively in Mexico . The plant has produced more than 550,000 premium vehicles for international markets since opening. The facility has integrated technologies including collaborative robots, artificial intelligence and additive manufacturing through 3D printing, BMW said. Von Moltke said the plant had built more than a manufacturing operation over the past decade. 'Ten years ago we began building a plant; today we see the impact of having built a community of talent, innovation, and collaboration that has contributed to the growth of San Luis Potosí and the strengthening of the Mexican automotive industry,' he said. BMW said more than 1,200 young people had taken part in professional internship programmes at the site, while over 570 apprentices had completed a dual vocational training programme modelled on Germany's technical education system, with a 95% hiring rate upon completion. © 2026 bne IntelliNews, source Magazine
