Argentine energy company Central Puerto has signed a five-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with fuel marketer Axion Energy to supply renewable electricity to its Campana refinery in Buenos Aires province, pv-magazine reported. Under the agreement, 25% of the refinery's electricity consumption—approximately 60 GWh annually—will be sourced from wind and solar power plants operated by Central Puerto in Buenos Aires , Córdoba, and Salta provinces. The contract includes I-REC certificates certifying the renewable origin of the energy, enabling international recognition of the clean electricity supplied. The deal represents one of Argentina's first renewable generation contracts for a refinery utilising this international certification mechanism, with similar agreements expected across the fuel sector as industrial consumers increasingly prioritise traceability and renewable sourcing. Axion Energy stated the contract forms part of an energy optimisation strategy for Campana operations, complementing infrastructure investments, including a new $70mn distillation tower. Central Puerto emphasised that the agreement strengthens its position as a renewable energy supplier to high-demand industrial clients. This PPA signals growing momentum in Argentina's corporate renewable energy market, demonstrating that private sector decarbonisation efforts continue despite broader economic challenges under President Milei's administration.
