The decision coincides with KLM’s push to accelerate cost‑cutting measures and to restructure its operations. Leadership transition At the same time, the airline’s Chief Operating Officer, Maarten Stienen , has announced that he will not stand for reappointment. He attributed this choice to the impending changes within the organisation. KLM has already implemented a number of cost‑saving measures, including scrapping 250 office jobs. A spokesperson for the airline indicated that further measures are expected in the coming months. Focus on internal operations During her second term, Rintel will shift her focus to the internal organisation and direct operational management, and place less emphasis on external relations. She stressed the need for a strong operational and financial foundation to steer KLM through a challenging and competitive environment. The CEO outlined KLM’s intention to step up the transformation process through structural measures aimed at streamlining operations, increasing revenue and minimising costs. Restructuring the leadership The search for Stienen’s successor is in full swing, while KLM continues its efforts to optimise its leadership structure. Last year, the airline reduced its executive board from five to four members. The trade unions’ reactions to Rintel’s reappointment were muted. Reinier Castelein , chair of the De Unie union, acknowledged that there are ongoing concerns about disappointing financial results, staff shortages and production delays. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence in the CEO’s ability to improve KLM’s performance. He recognised that Paris has given Rintel a more intensive mandate to revitalise KLM, but also admitted that this renewed confidence is met with mixed feelings.
