Toyota Tsusho to establish vehicle assembly plant in Laos

About this update from Toyota Tsusho Corp.

Toyota Tsusho is expanding its presence in Laos . The Japanese trading group has announced the creation of Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing Laos Co., Ltd. (TTML), a new company that will assemble vehicles for the domestic market and support the country’s growing automotive sector, according to Toyota Tsusho’s website .  The facility will operate using a knock-down (KD) production model, in which vehicle components are imported and assembled locally. Production is scheduled to begin in April 2028 following phased investment and workforce development. Toyota Tsusho entered the Lao market as an authorised Toyota distributor in 2018 after taking over sales operations from Toyota Motor Corporation . Since then, the company has focused on strengthening its sales and after-sales network across the country. The move comes as demand for new vehicles in Laos continues to rise alongside economic growth, urbanisation and increasing vehicle ownership. The company said relying solely on imported finished vehicles has created challenges related to pricing and supply stability, prompting the shift towards local assembly. TTML plans to manufacture more than 5,000 vehicles a year, with production centred on popular models including the Hilux pick-up truck and Fortuner sport utility vehicle (SUV). The project is also expected to create around 150 local jobs over time, while supporting skills development within the workforce. Toyota Tsusho intends to draw on its experience operating vehicle assembly businesses across Asia , the Middle East and Africa . The company will oversee the entire process, from parts procurement and logistics to assembly, sales and after-sales services, with the aim of creating a reliable and efficient supply chain. The investment forms part of Toyota Tsusho’s broader strategy to strengthen its mobility business. The company said the project would contribute to the development of Laos’ automotive industry while supporting employment, skills training and long-term economic growth.   © 2026 bne IntelliNews, source Magazine
