Key takeaways

  • TotalEnergies will develop the Ima gas field in Nigeria to boost the country’s LNG exports.
  • The production target is 10 million cubic metres of gas per day by 2028.
  • Energy giants are diversifying their gas sources to sidestep geopolitical instability.

TotalEnergies has committed to developing the offshore Ima gas field in Nigeria, with the aim of increasing the available feedstock for the country’s growing LNG export facility. The French energy giant will act as project operator with a 40 per cent stake and will work together with local partner AMNI, which holds the remaining 60 per cent.

Infrastructure

The project, located in shallow waters near Bonny Island, will use a single platform connected by a 22-kilometre pipeline to the Nigeria LNG plant – in which TotalEnergies holds a 15 per cent stake.

Production targets

Operations are expected to start in 2028, with a projected peak production of 10 million cubic metres per day, equivalent to more than 60,000 barrels of oil per day.

This initiative is intended to supply around one-third of the gas needed for the expansion of Train 7 at Nigeria LNG, a project that aims to increase the plant’s annual liquefaction capacity from 22 million to 30 million tonnes.

Sustainability

To minimise environmental impact, the development of Ima will use a streamlined platform, power from shore, a strict no-flaring policy and continuous methane monitoring.

Nicolas Terraz, head of Exploration & Production at TotalEnergies, stressed that the company aims to create sustainable value for Nigeria and its stakeholders, while at the same time strengthening gas supply.
