Suzuki expands India output with new EV line

Suzuki Motor is set to increase annual automobile production capacity at its plant in western India to 1mn units, as it adds a new production line aimed at scaling up electric vehicle output, Japan’s Jiji Press reports.

The expansion will raise capacity by 250,000 units at the facility in Hansalpur, in the state of Gujarat, which is operated by subsidiary Maruti Suzuki India. The company opened the site to media on March 18, offering a view of operations at one of its key manufacturing hubs.

The new production line, currently under construction and scheduled for completion between July and September, will be dedicated to electric vehicles. It will become the fourth line at the plant, which has been in operation since 2017 and covers an area of approximately 2.6mn square metres.

The additional line will primarily be used to produce the e Vitara, Suzuki’s first electric vehicle model. Production adjustments will also be made across the site, with an existing line currently used for the e Vitara to be repurposed to increase output of the Fronx, a compact sport utility vehicle that has seen strong demand.
