Sumitomo Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Shingo Ueno; hereinafter referred to as 'Sumitomo Corporation') will participate in the participation of Gwynt Glas, a floating offshore wind power company developed by the French Electric Power Corporation (EDF power solutions UK and Ireland) and the Irish Electric Power Corporation (ESB) in the Celtic Sea off the coast of the United Kingdom.
This project is intended to develop, construct and operate a floating offshore wind farm with a total installed capacity of approximately one and a half gigawatts in the waters about 40km off the coast of the British Kert Sea.
The UK government has positioned offshore wind as an important large-scale power source for achieving Net Zero by 2050, and in particular, floating offshore wind is expected to be a technology that enables offshore wind power in deep waters, which is difficult to install with conventional implanted offshore wind power generation.
Since Sumitomo Corporation participated in the European offshore wind power project, Sumitomo Corporation has accumulated know-how at each stage of development, construction, and operation. We will promote the development of this project in cooperation with partners who have a track record of developing floating offshore wind power generation projects in Europe. In addition, we have signed a comprehensive memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Business Innovation, Science and Trade of the United Kingdom, which is part of the Ministry of Business Innovation, Science and Trade, under the British government, to promote business investment in the UK, and this is one of the important initiatives in line with the memorandum of understanding. In collaboration with the UK government, Sumitomo Corporation will contribute to the development of clean energy in the UK by utilizing Sumitomo Corporation's knowledge and global network.
