On 2 October 2026, Stadler handed over the last of a total of 60 RABe 512 double-deck InterRegio trains to Swiss Feder Railways (SBB). All 60 vehicles have been delivered on schedule. The trains have been well received by passengers and have been operating reliably since mid-2023 in the Zurich region, the Swiss Midlands and Western Switzerland. Together, the fleet has already accumulated more than 23 million kilometres in passenger service.
If all 60 RABe 512 trainsets were coupled together, they would form a train more than nine kilometres long. Since entering passenger service in mid-2023, the fleet has covered over 23 million kilometres, which is equivalent to 30 trips to the moon. The trains have demonstrated high availability while using innovative technologies. This includes a propane-based air conditioning system that is significantly more environmentally friendly than conventional solutions. With the on-time handover of the final vehicle to SBB on 2 October 2026, Stadler has successfully completed the production phase of the SBB InterRegio double-deck trains.
All vehicles delivered according to schedule
The successful completion of production was achieved despite a number of challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic, global supply chain disruptions and the flooding of Constellium's aluminium plant in Valais, Switzerland, in the summer of 2024 repeatedly put the project under pressure. Nevertheless, the project teams at SBB and Stadler succeeded in keeping production on track. "Delivering 60 vehicles on time and in outstanding quality demonstrates what can be achieved when customer and manufacturer work closely together with a shared focus on successfully bringing the trains into service. I would like to thank SBB for their trust and the project teams for their big commitment," said Lucius Gerig, Head of Division Switzerland at Stadler.
