Hoogvliet, The Netherlands, 3 September 2026 - SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, is playing a key role in the next phase of ONE-Dyas' N05-A project in the Dutch North Sea. As Smulders HSM's multi-technical partner, SPIE will deliver the complete HVAC, mechanical and electrical and instrumentation (E&I) scope, supporting the further development of the N05-A gas production platform. From June 2027 a new compression module will be integrated into the platform - the first offshore gas production platform in the North Sea to operate entirely on electricity generated by offshore wind power. ONE-Dyas, Dutch company operating the N05-A platform, has awarded Smulders HSM, a provider of multidisciplinary offshore platform solutions, the contract to build and integrate a new compression module that will enable efficient gas production from the N05-A field well into the future. The project will be delivered by an integrated project team consisting of Smulders HSM, SPIE and offshore installation partner Scaldis. Working together as a single team from the outset will minimise interfaces between contractors, streamline decision-making and improve efficiency throughout the engineering, procurement, construction and installation phases. The compression module comprises two independent compression trains, enabling the platform to continue operating under varying pressure conditions as reservoir characteristics change over time. The module will be integrated into the existing N05-A platform, which has been operational since March 2025. Three technical disciplines within one integrated scope Within the project, SPIE is responsible for the HVAC, mechanical and E&I scope of the compression module, bringing three technical disciplines together under a single point of responsibility: HVAC: climate control, ventilation and pressure management systems designed for offshore environments; Mechanical: piping, support structures, equipment installation, preservation and testing; E&I: power supply systems, cable infrastructure, safety systems, instrumentation and integration with the existing platform. Combining these disciplines within a single organisation reduces the number of interfaces, streamlines communication and improves overall execution efficiency. This multidisciplinary approach offers significant benefits, particularly when integrating new installations into an existing offshore platform. Supporting security of supply while extending the value of an electrified offshore platform The N05-A platform occupies a unique position in the North Sea. By using electricity from the nearby German offshore wind farm Riffgat, the platform's direct operational emissions are significantly reduced. The new compression module will make it possible to continue producing gas from the same field longer and more efficiently, while maximising the use of existing infrastructure. For SPIE, the project demonstrates how technology can contribute to both energy security and sustainability. As the Netherlands continues its energy transition natural gas will remain part of the energy mix for the foreseeable future. The challenge is therefore to produce it as efficiently and with as few emissions as possible. N05-A illustrates this approach: an electrified offshore platform powered by wind energy, demonstrating how innovative technology can significantly reduce the direct operational emissions associated with energy production. By delivering the compression module, SPIE is helping to maximize the value and extend the service life of this low-emission infrastructure.
