Spanish energy group Iberdrola plans to invest nearly BRL25bn (€4.5bn) in electrical infrastructure in the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia through 2030, the company said, representing half of the total distribution network investment planned by its Brazilian subsidiary Neoenergia over the next five years, El Periódico de la Energía reported. The Bahia plan, to be carried out through Neoenergia Coelba, includes 54 new substations, more than 2,000 kilometres of high-voltage lines and 42,000 kilometres of medium-voltage networks, Iberdrola chief executive Ignacio Galán announced at the Bahia Farm Show agricultural fair, attended by Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and ministers of energy and agriculture. Neoenergia's total five-year distribution investment across Brazil will reach BRL50bn following the recent renewal of its distribution concessions for a further 30 years, signed last May. Galán said the concession renewal 'has been key to guaranteeing predictability through regulations that encourage investment in a framework of legal certainty.' Iberdrola has been present in Brazil for nearly three decades and serves more than 40mn people through Neoenergia, which operates across 18 states and the Federal District and is the country's largest electricity distribution group. The Spanish group has invested more than BRL120bn in Brazil since entering the market in 1997.
