Explanation on Business Results
During the first six months of the current fiscal year, the second declaration of the state of emergency was issued due to the resurgence in COVID-19 infections. This had a major impact on economic activities and personal consumption, and the Japanese economy still continues to be in a difficult situation. With concerns about a resurge in infections, the outlook for the economy in Japan and overseas is expected to remain uncertain although a moderate recovery in economic activities is likely as measures are taken to prevent the spread of infections.
Under such a market environment, during the first six months of the current fiscal year, net sales declined from the same period of the previous fiscal year. This was due to a temporary restraint in advertising investment in the latter half of the previous fiscal year and a decrease in the number of customers visiting direct stores and other stores that handle our products amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but progressed in line with the plan.
In the Mail Order segment, domestic EC sales expanded steadily, supported by the smooth acquisition of new customers driven by active advertising investment in addition to the up-selling of "PERFECT ONE Wrinkle Stretch Gel" to existing customers, which continued to be strong as in the first quarter.
In the Direct Store Sales/Wholesale segment, the business environment has remained harsh mainly due to continued self-restraint on outings following the declaration of a state of emergency issued in January.
In the Overseas Sales segment, we are working to expand sales while closely monitoring the impact of COVID-19 infections and the status of economic activities in the local areas. In China, our main market, we have been steadily increasing sales through the implementation of live commerce utilizing SNS and popular KOL, etc. In ASEAN, we have started to deploy our products in major EC malls such as Lazada, Shopee, and Konvy in Thailand and are working to increase awareness of and sales to the younger generations in the local areas.
In the Smart Health Care Business, we launched "BODY AURA," a supplement which boosts the ability to protect yourself* (self-protection power) necessary for health management in the new normal era. We began selling the product through our own online shop and at drugstores nationwide. We will work to increase brand awareness and sales through TV commercials and SNS.
As a result of the foregoing, for the first six months of the current fiscal year, net sales were 16,575 million yen (down 1.5% year on year), operating profit was 1,398 million yen (up 27.3% year on year), ordinary profit was 1,430 million yen (up 30.0% year on year), and profit was 965 million yen (up 40.8% year on year).
The Company's business segments consist of Mail Order, Direct Store Sales/Wholesale, and Overseas Sales of cosmetics and merchandise related to health care. As the ratio of Direct Store Sales/Wholesale and Overseas Sales to overall sales is insignificant, and their materiality as disclosed information is low, description by business segment has been omitted. - The ability to maintain strength by eating and exercising.
