Seeker, using its Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology, scans the surface of the earth to detect buried minefields using light helicopters covering up to 4 square kilometres per day. The technology also combines other multi-spectral sensors with the GPR to provide a full aerial survey product including mineral detection, mapping and pipeline survey.
One Source is a well established group of companies involved in the security, verification and infrastructure industries, in the region. One Source comprises a group with interest in 11 companies and employs, directly and indirectly, more than 350 people. Through its group of companies One Source has also worked, over several years, in the removal of buried munitions and has successfully completed the clearance of a large area of land, which was designated as a military range. One Source operates in Africa for Africa, with a strong heritage in technology, project management and transaction advisory services.
Missile and ammunition testing sites have similarities to minefields. Up to 15% of explosives fired down such ranges do not explode on impact, leaving unexploded ordnance, lying on and buried beneath the surface, rendering the land too dangerous for humans and animals to enter or inhabit. The South African government has pledged that further areas will be cleared, made safe and returned to their historic tribal ownership.
The JV company, named Seeker Source (Pty) Ltd., will use ground penetrating sensors that will search for buried explosives while complementary sensors will be carried to collect geographical data to produce photographic maps of each targeted area. While surveying each area, Seeker Tec will also carry a variety of other equipment that is capable of undertaking additional functions. The management of wildlife is a critical area of concern for several African countries which rely on tourism. Seeker is already in negotiation with a number of governments to survey very large areas for minefield detection and wildlife welfare and conservation.
Seeker Source will provide the operational arm for Seeker Tec, providing the on-the-ground human management and operational resources. The company will solicit contracts throughout Southern Africa, from its Durban offices.
Seeker Source will also survey using new technology to detect minerals. Seeker has already discovered six potential areas in the region that indicate the presence of valuable minerals. Two of those areas indicate minerals that would be commercially viable to prospect. Seeker Source will provide the operational resource to undergo a ground truth program to validate those finds.
Mr Silumko Masemola, a One Source group Director said, ‘This business relationship with Seeker is a very important strategic step for our company. We have known of Seeker Tec and the Mineseeker Foundation for a long time and have used the ground penetrating radar on a ‘one-off’ basis to successfully clear a missile site in the north of South Africa. The JV will mean that we can tender for the many contracts available in the region. We are currently in strategic negotiations to broaden South Africa and Africa’s unexploded ordnance clearing, parks management (anti-poaching) and resource management capabilities, details of which we will release in due course.”
Seeker Tec Chairman Mike Kendrick added, “One Source is a well established and credible company whose workplace is Southern Africa. Seeker will greatly benefit from its knowledge, experience and network.”
