Historic Wark Estate on the River Tweed launches to the market for first time in 66 years

· Issued by Savills Plc

Wark Estate and Tweed Fishings, which extends to approximately 968 acres, lies around the historic hamlet of Wark in Northumberland and comprises a fully refurbished principal house, three additional dwellings, productive farmland, woodland and two highly regarded salmon fishing beats on the internationally renowned River Tweed.

The estate's history dates back more than 900 years, originating as the Barony of Wark granted by Henry I in the early 12th century, with Wark Castle forming part of a key chain of Border strongholds. Over the centuries it passed through notable ownership and played a role in Anglo-Scottish history before evolving into a productive rural estate following the Union of the Crowns in 1603. In its modern form, the estate was purchased by the Lovett family in 1960.

The estate is being jointly marketed by Savills and Edwin Thompson. Commenting on the sale, Savills Director Andrew Black, says: "The Estate has been in the ownership of the Lovett family for the last 66 years. Following Jennifer Lovett's death in 2019 it has been managed by Trustees who have now decided that the property, in its entirety, should be sold. This will only be the second time that there has been a change of ownership in over 100 years."

At the heart of the estate sits Wark House, an impressive traditional country house offering six en-suite bedrooms and recently modernised to a high standard. The wider holding is well balanced, comprising a significant acreage of productive arable land, permanent pasture, approximately 79 acres of woodland, a central commercial farm steading and a range of workshop units providing additional income streams.

A standout feature of Wark Estate is its sporting offering. The estate enjoys approximately 3.7 miles of double-bank salmon fishing across the South Wark and Lower North Wark beats, forming a highly regarded stretch of the Lower Tweed, celebrated for both quality and consistency.

"Wark is an estate of real scale and substance, combining rich history with strong commercial agricultural fundamentals", adds Andrew. "Opportunities of this calibre are exceptionally rare, particularly those that offer high-quality farmland, traditional residential property and outstanding salmon fishing in one cohesive holding. This represents a compelling opportunity for purchasers seeking a resilient and versatile country estate."

Wark Estate and Tweed Fishings is offered for sale as a whole or in up to three separate lots, providing flexibility for a range of prospective buyers.
