Press release
Units 1 and 2 of Cernavoda NPP are Maintained in a Safe Shutdown State
Bucharest, October 11, 2026
National Company Nuclearelectrica S.A. (SNN) announces that Units 1 and 2 of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) are maintained in a safe shutdown state. This situation poses no risk to nuclear safety.
By design, the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant has multiple cooling systems, designed to operate at different cooling water levels. These systems are activated and used according to specific technical parameters. Thus, nuclear safety functions are fully ensured at all times.
The measures adopted by the Romanian authorities help maintain the level of redundancy in the plant's cooling systems, particularly for the protection of the pumps. These measures complement Cernavodă NPP's own systems and reflect the effective collaboration with all institutions involved.
Throughout the entire period during which Units 1 and 2 remain shut down, nuclear safety is ensured through redundant systems, specific procedures, and permanently assigned teams of specialists. The situation affects only electricity production.
Given the hydrological prognosis for the coming period, the units will remain in a safe shutdown state until the Danube's water level allows for the safe resumption of operations.
"Nuclear safety is always the top priority for a nuclear operator. The Cernavoda plant is designed to handle a wide range of scenarios, and nuclear safety functions are constantly ensured, whether the reactors are in operation or shut down. The current situation is challenging from an energy production perspective, but it is fully managed from a nuclear safety standpoint, thanks to our technology, design, and the expertise of our teams. We are using this period of controlled shutdown for maintenance activities and to enhance resilience until the Danube's water level allows for the safe restart of the units. At the same time, we have initiated consultations with experts to identify the best medium- and long-term solutions, so that the impact of similar situations can be minimized as much as possible in the future."-Mihai Laurențiu Gioară, Chief Executive Officer SN Nuclearelectrica SA
SNN will inform shareholders and the public via a new press release when the units are reconnected to the National Power Grid.
