The online marketplace Rakuten, formerly PriceMinister, is looking for a buyer for its namesake marketplace in France.
If that doesn’t succeed, the Japanese will pull the plug. A seemingly interested buyer is the site’s original founder.
The results of Rakuten in France are disappointing. The number of users has fallen by 33 percent. After fifteen years of ownership, the Japanese are calling it a day. It’s up to the market to decide whether the 180 employees can keep their jobs or will have to look for another position.
The fate of the planned expansion into Spain is uncertain.
Other European activities of Rakuten are: Rakuten TV, e-book company Kobo and telecoms provider Viber.
