Nomura Real Estate Holdings, Inc. (“NREHD”, Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President and Representative Director: Satoshi Arai) has identified biodiversity as one of the group’s “Priority Issues (Materiality) for 2030.” In order to respond to international requirements and to promote initiatives aimed at achieving a nature-positive society, we formulated the NREG Biodiversity Policy in April 2024. Under this policy, the group have set a goal of achieving “zero deforestation and land conversion in the group’s timber procurement supply chain by 2030,” and, to attain this goal, NREHD have newly formulated the NREG Timber Procurement Guidelines (“Guidelines”).

In formulating the Guidelines, NREHD incorporated advanced global perspectives by obtaining supervision from WWF Japan, an international environmental NGO (World Wide Fund for Nature Japan; Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director : Takejiro Sueyoshi), and have set out commitments and targets that reflect expertise on environmental conservation and global sustainability trends.

We are also working within our business divisions to ascertain the actual status of timber use and to develop internal rules related to timber use, in order to enhance the effectiveness of the Guidelines. By this enhancement, NREHD aim to operate the Guidelines in a more feasible and effective manner.

Along formulating the Guidelines, NREHD have partially revised the existing NREG Procurement Guidelines to add a statement that matters related to timber procurement should be referred to the NREG Timber Procurement Guidelines. Through this revision, we will promote the application of clearer and more effective procurement standards.

1. Overview of the NREG Timber Procurement Guidelines (excerpt)

   1. Background and Purpose of These Guidelines

      The NREG has established its Sustainability Policy “Earth Pride” to clarify responsibilities the Group must fulfill as a business entity toward 2050. For the sake of children who will shape the future and for the naturally rich Earth, the Group has identified the “Maintaining harmony with nature” as one of the Group’s key themes.

      In particular, the Group recognizes that initiatives to protect biodiversity through the Group’s business activities represent opportunities for corporate growth and are important management issues.

      In recent years, the degradation of forests that support natural ecosystems and the decline of their multifaceted functions have become societal challenges. The Group's supply chain, which uses timber, must also sincerely address these issues. Based on this understanding, the NREG Biodiversity Policy sets the goal of achieving “zero deforestation and land conversion in the Group's timber supply chain by 2030.” To achieve this goal, the Group has established the Timber Procurement Guidelines. Separate Procurement Guidelines have been established for procurement in general to secure the cooperation of the Group’s suppliers and partners.

   2. Scope of Application

      These Guidelines apply to any and all timber and timber products procured within the Group's supply chain. The Group itself promotes procurement activities in compliance with these Guidelines and requires our suppliers to engage in sustainable timber procurement together with us. These Guidelines apply to the entire supply chain, including direct and indirect business partners.

   3. Commitments and Goals

      The NREG aims to achieve zero deforestation and land conversion in the Group’s supply chain for timber procurement by 2030.

      • Transition to Sustainability-Conscious Timber

        • We will establish risk assessment methods for any and all timber and timber products procured within the supply chain, aiming for 100% use of sustainability-conscious timber by fiscal year 2030.

      • Full Traceability

        • We aim for 100% traceability back to the origins by fiscal year 2030.

      • Risk Assessment

• We will assess risks of deforestation, land conversion, and human rights violations within our supply chain. We position our engagement with suppliers that source and use timber from high-risk regions as a key issue and will advance our response. For regions deemed to involve high risks, we will make effort to progressively reduce risks through additional investigations, dialogues with suppliers, and the use of internationally credible certifications.
