About this update from Wells Fargo & Company

A new survey from FinanceBuzz, sponsored by Wells Fargo, finds that the two-week pay cycle takes a real financial and emotional toll on U.S. workers, and reveals a major awareness gap around early paycheck access. DELRAY BEACH, Fla., Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- A new survey  released today by FinanceBuzz, as part of a sponsored content relationship with Wells Fargo, finds that while nearly 9 in 10 Americans (88%) celebrate payday, most also face real financial strain in the days leading up to it. The survey of 2,000 full-time U.S. workers reveals a mismatch between when Americans are paid and when their bills and expenses actually come due. "It's not just an overspending problem. The reality is that paychecks come up on a schedule, but life doesn't, and that mismatch is what creates the bulk of the financial stress we feel throughout the month," said Melinda Sineriz, Managing Editor of FinanceBuzz. "Banking features like early pay access allow extra flexibility to close that gap." Key findings from the survey include: The data also points to a clear awareness gap of tools that can help relieve financial worry ahead of payday. 31% of workers surveyed said they aren't even sure whether their bank offers early pay access at all. Among those who have early pay  access, the benefits are tangible. 54% have used it to make a bill or rent payment on time, 49% to avoid a late fee, and 39% to avoid an overdraft fee. Overall, 61% of those with early pay access say the feature helps reduce their overall level of financial stress . The full study and findings are available at https://financebuzz.com/payday-statistics . About the Survey FinanceBuzz surveyed 2,000 full-time U.S. workers via Prolific in late June 2026 about their pay schedules, payday habits, and experiences with early paycheck access. Some questions were filtered for relevance (e.g., questions about early pay behaviors were only shown to respondents who indicated their bank offers the feature), and several questions were asked on a standard Likert frequency scale (from "almost always" to "never"), and results were grouped to produce the figures shown. Statistics on the share of private employers using each pay frequency are sourced from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. All research and analysis were conducted by FinanceBuzz and sponsored by Wells Fargo as part of a sponsored content relationship.
