Retirement of Directors from the Board of Nation
Media Group PLC
The Board of Directors of Nation Media Group PLC (the Company) announces the retirement of the following Directors:
1. Wangethi Mwangi as a Non-Executive Director of the Company effective 28 June 2024
Mr. Mwangi has served on the Nation Media Group board for 8 years between August 2017 and June 2024. In this period, he has been a member of the Tanzania and Uganda subsidiary Boards, the Editorial Board Committee and the Human Resources Committee.
Throughout his over 30-years career in journalism, Mr. Mwangi has been pivotal in shaping the media landscape in various capacities; as the Editorial Director at NMG, a founding member of the Kenya Editors Guild and Media Council of Kenya, a member of the Tanzania Media Council›s Think Tank and the International Press Institute.
In his time on the NMG Board, he has unreservedly lent this professional experience to the organisation's strategic and editorial direction, having been at the forefront of the media evolution over the years. He has also played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Kusi Ideas Festival, NMG's annual pan-African conference, and is a trustee of the Nation Media Foundation.
Mr. Mwangi has dedicated his life to telling the stories that matter and fighting for press freedom in the region. In so doing, he has left an indelible mark of passion, resilience and hard work in the journalism profession, and on the NMG Board of Directors.
2. Francis O Okello as a Non-Executive Director of the Company effective 28 June 2024.
Mr. Okello joined the Nation Media Group Board in December 1995 and for 28 years, has brought his extensive industry experience in law, banking and corporate governance, to the Board.
Having previously served on the Absa Group Limited (formerly Barclays Africa Group Limited) and Absa Bank Limited (South Africa) Boards, and as a member of the Advisory Board of the Strathmore University Business School, and the Advisory Committee of the Aga Khan University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences-East Africa, Mr. Okello's career has spanned various industries and set him apart as a distinguished legal and corporate professional.
In his current capacity, Mr. Okello serves as an Executive Director and Board Advisor at Industrial Promotion Services (East Africa), a significant player in the region's industrial development.
As the Chairman of NMG's Editorial Board Committee, Mr. Okello used his vast experience to chart the Group's editorial direction and its policies. He is credited for the company's regulations on the coverage of sensitive matters and the development of insider trading guidelines among other key matters at the Group.
Mr. Okello leaves the NMG Board with a legacy of meticulous attention to detail, environmental advocacy and being a fierce defender of truth and editorial freedom.
3. Sumayya Hassan as an Independent Non-Executive Director of the Company effective 28 June 2024
Mrs. Hassan has served on the NMG board for four years, during which, she was a member of the Editorial Board Committee.
As a seasoned professional with a robust track record across multiple industries, her expertise spans a range of critical areas from corporate governance, negotiation, business planning and mergers & acquisitions (M&A).
These skills have been critical in her service as an Independent Non-Executive Director at the Board. In this role, she has been an ardent advocate for consumer feedback throughout the Group's digital transformation journey.
In addition, she has dedicated significant efforts to non-profit foundations, focusing on education and supporting the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
As she retires from her directorial role, the Board thanks her for her exemplary leadership, innovation, and commitment to our consumers and the community.
