Mapfre Re, Mapfre's reinsurance unit, participated in a recent event hosted by EUSPA in Brussels focused on the use of Copernicus program data to support flood risk management in the insurance and reinsurance industry. Mapfre Re is contributing to a pilot project led by EUSPA and developed in collaboration with ICEYE, which has explored how satellite data can complement internal models and improve early loss estimation and understanding of the impact of extreme events. During the Brussels meeting, Adrián Fernández, Natural Perils Analyst at Mapfre Re, presented the insights gained from this initiative. As noted by EUSPA in its publication on the project, Miriam García, Manager of the Natural Perils Area at Mapfre Re, emphasized the importance of having objective information on the evolution and extent of flood events to enable more accurate risk management.
