VANCOUVER, Jan. 12 /CNW/ - FREEPORT RESOURCES INC. is very pleased to
announce the appointments of Mr. Peter Dimmell as a Director, and Mr. James
Thistle as Secretary to the Board. Freeport welcomes the contributions of Mr.
Dimmell and Mr. Thistle, whose efforts over the past six years have greatly
assisted in the success of the company.
Peter Dimmell, P.Geo., is a well respected professional geoscientist
with 37 years of exploration experience in Canada, the US and overseas. A St.
John's resident, Mr. Dimmell graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the
University of New Brunswick and is registered with the Association of
Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of NL. In 1969, he commenced work
with Noranda Exploration in eastern Canada. Seventeen years later, he became
an exploration and technical consultant and director/officer for a number of
major and junior mining companies. Dimmell has worked on Freeport's Hutton
discovery, as well as the Notakwanon property located in the centre of Inco's
Garland Lake claims.
Guiding projects from exploration to production, Mr. Dimmell has been
involved in all aspects of the industry world-wide, and has a recognized
knowledge of placer deposits. He has served on the boards of numerous public
companies and professional organizations. He is currently a Director and the
President of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada.
Jim Thistle, Q.C., also a St. John's resident, was called to the Bar in
Newfoundland in 1979 and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1989. Thistle has served
as Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General for Newfoundland,
and has significant litigation and regulatory experience. He was General
Counsel for the Hibernia offshore oil project, and has worked on a variety of
major resource projects, in North America and internationally. Mr. Thistle was
instrumental in shifting the proposed park boundaries adjacent to the Hutton
garnet-titanium beaches to permit exploration and development work to proceed.
Thistle's background is broad, encompassing resource development, energy,
construction & environmental law, as well as public law. He acted as counsel
for the Province of Newfoundland on the Royal Commission on the Ocean Ranger
Marine Disaster, and has worked on major energy litigation cases such as the
NL Continental Shelf (1984), and A.G. Newfoundland v. Quebec Hydro et. al.
(1988). He is a well known presenter on oil and gas issues at conferences such
as OTANS, Canadian Bar Association: National Construction Section, NOIBE and
Oil Works Atlantic Canada. Thistle is a partner with the law firm McInnes
Cooper, and is also involved with a variety of community and legal
organizations.
Freeport Resources, founded in 1981, is a junior mineral exploration
company listed on the TSX Venture Exchange. Freeport has landholdings in
Labrador and B.C., with a special focus on industrial minerals, precious
metals, and gemstones.
