Eni, Malaysian PETRONAS form mega-JV, consolidating 19 gas assets

About this update from Eni S.p.a.

Italian energy major Eni SpA (BIT: ENI) and Malaysia’s state-owned energy titan PETRONAS (6033.KL) have formally launched Searah, an independent 50-50 joint venture that consolidates their premium upstream gas portfolios across the ASEAN corridor, Decode39 reports. The transaction represents a massive structural milestone, creating a dominant new regional operator poised to capture market share in one of the world's fastest-growing industrial energy markets. The finalisation of Searah arrives precisely seven months after the two energy giants signed their formal investment agreement on November 3, 2025 , and 16 months after their initial memorandum of understanding in February 2025 . The newly minted corporate platform debuts with an immediate, high-volume production baseline of over 300,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), backstopped by a legally unified portfolio of 19 production and development gas assets spanning the maritime borders of Indonesia and Malaysia . Searah's operational footprint has been deliberately weighted toward Indonesia’s deepwater gas plays to maximise near-term infrastructure tie-backs, while utilising Malaysia’s advanced liquefaction networks to streamline export logistics. Eni contributes its deepwater blocks and high-impact discoveries in the Kutei Basin and North Ganal blocks, providing the venture with massive, unmapped exploration upside. PETRONAS injects premium, stable producing fields off the coast of Sarawak and Sabah , offering immediate cash-flow stability and direct pipeline connectivity to major regional distribution hubs. Operating under a unified board, the partners have committed capital to scale production by over 66%, targeting a sustainable throughput exceeding 500,000 boe/d within the next three years. For Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi , the creation of Searah is a textbook execution of his signature corporate satellite strategy. Rather than absorbing global assets into a single, slow-moving corporate balance sheet, Eni systematically carves out specialised, high-growth business platforms that can independently tap global capital markets, lower operating costs, and accelerate project execution. The launch of Searah in Southeast Asia represents just one wing of Eni's aggressive global portfolio transformation. Under Descalzi, the Italian major is shedding legacy carbon-heavy assets to build a highly agile, gas-focused supply network positioned across strategic international frontiers. © 2026 bne IntelliNews, source Magazine
