Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. - First Coal Carrier for Japanese Thermal Power Stations to Use a Wind-Powered Kite Propulsion

· Issued by Electric Power Development Co., Ltd.

Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-POWER, headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Toshifumi Watanabe) and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. ('K' LINE, headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Yukikazu Myochin) have agreed to install an automated kite system using wind power called Seawing onboard the coal carrier CORONA CITRUS.

The Seawing system will use wind power to assist in propelling the vessel and to reduce the use of fuel oil. Seawing is expected to reduce CO2 emissions while underway by an average of 20% compared with conventional propulsion. The vessel is the first coal carrier for Japanese thermal power stations to use this system. The vessel, which entered service in September 2019 under a contract between J-POWER and 'K' LINE, is equipped with a SOx scrubber to remove sulfur oxides from the engine exhaust gases in compliance with SOx emission regulations. Seawing will further reduce the vessel's environmental impact. We will continue to take on the challenge of achieving carbon neutrality, as stated in J-POWER BLUE MISSION 2050 in February 2021.
