Alipay, the world's leading digital payment and lifestyle app operated by Ant Financial Services Group, has been available on all 15,000 ComfortDelGro taxis since 12 July this year. In just slightly more than a month, over 10,000 Alipay transactions have been conducted. Alipay has more than 520 million active users and most are Chinese Nationals.
Using Alipay is easy: At the end of the taxi trip, the cabby selects Alipay on the cashless payment terminal and a QR Code will appear. The passenger scans the QR code using the Alipay app and keys in the password to confirm the payment. An administrative fee will be waived from 1 September to 31 December 2017. Passengers using Alipay for ComfortDelGro taxi rides can enjoy discounts of up to RMB20 (S$4) every month. Cabbies will also receive S$1 incentive in their bank accounts by the next working day for every successful Alipay transaction they accept.
Mr Wang Chun Yu, a Chinese National from Weihai, Shandong, who is on Long-Term Visit Pass, welcomes the added payment mode. The 31-year-old warehouse supervisor said: "It is good that the Alipay payment process here is as easy as the process in China. Having Alipay available on board taxis will be convenient for my family and friends who visit from China. They can still travel on taxis when they don't have enough Singapore currency."
Mr Ang Wei Neng, CEO of ComfortDelGro Taxi, said: "The tourists from China have increased significantly over the years and we want to make it easier for them to pay taxi fare with a wallet that they are familiar with i.e., Alipay. We are already seeing hundreds of Alipay transactions daily and with the official launch, we expect to see thousands."

Mr Dayong Zhang, Head of Alipay Southeast Asia, shared the same sentiment. He said: "We are pleased to partner ComfortDelGro Taxi, the largest taxi operator in Singapore, to roll out Alipay on board its taxis. Chinese tourists can now travel to Singapore with their smartphone and passport only, and ride a taxi to anywhere they find on Alipay's in-app Discovery platform to enjoy the local experience."
Cabby Loh Kia Chin, 62, who has accepted a number of Alipay transactions, said: "I picked up a Chinese National recently and he was pleasantly surprised that Alipay is available and immediately asked to use Alipay. The transaction process is easy. Now, when I pick up tourists from China, I don't have to worry about not having small change or that the tourists will not have Singapore currency. So convenient!"
